After spending a lot of the summer reading novels, I’m firmly back to my nonfiction ways. I did read one novel last month, but it was an advanced copy, so my review has to wait until it comes out in November.
Regular readers may also notice that there isn’t a book on textiles on this list, despite my declaration last month that I was trying to read one a month. I spent September picking my way through a book on tapestry history written a century ago, but I’m not done yet, so that will have to wait for next month.
Ok, now on to the actual book reviews.
There Plant Eyes – this was a reread for me, as we chose it for book club last month. Since I was approaching the second time around, I opted for the audio edition. And once again, I loved it. You can see my original review here.
The Patriarchs – This book was everything The Power (which I read in August and really didn’t love) was not. It’s a wonderful exploration of matriarchal and matrilineal societies and a look at how we ended up in a world of patriarchy. I’d highly recommend this one.
Windswept – This book has been sitting on my shelf for three years, just waiting for the right moment, which turned out was now. There are a few moments of ableism in the book (I think the reason I put it down last time) but aside from that, I really enjoyed it. Besides a meditation on walking, it really explores what it means to be a woman out in the world.
Walkable City – Apparently I’m in my urban planning phase after reading Paved Paradise in June. This one is definitely dense, but I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you have any interest in revitalizing the place you live, it’s worth checking out. (And it’s added a bunch of other books to my TBR list as well.)
