Here are three more little paintings I started when I was working on painting in series. They didn’t quite get done with the group, but they’re all done now.

I’ve got a lot of paintings in the works right now. Some just aren’t coming together the way I’d like, and others are part of my next attempt at painting in series. I’m working on trying to find a balance between planning and play when I paint, but more on that later!

learning to work in series: paintings 33 – 42

Whenever I share my painting process on Instagram, I always use the hashtag #paintplay. Because that’s what I’ve been doing, letting myself play. Which has been pretty incredible, but on occasion, very frustrating. I’ll get a result I love in one painting, and the next feels like a big hot mess.

So I’ve challenged myself to try and break my own process down and work a little more in series. Now, it occurs to me that when most people work in series, they might work on one or two or maybe even three or four pieces at one time, but they probably don’t try to tackle more than that. But not me. I decided that the best way to work in series was to work on TEN paintings at once!

When you add that to the approximately half dozen other paintings I had going, that’s a lot of paintings at once!

For my first attempt at a series, I did keep it small. All the the paintings are 12″ x 12″. But it was still a lot to juggle!

One of the things I’ve been trying to figure out is how to develop a cohesive body of paintings without getting too repetitive. It’s an interesting balance, the need to play and the need to have a strong voice. I guess we’ll have to see where it goes…

On a positive note, banging out ten new paintings gets me that much closer to my goal of 100! It makes me feel so much more on track to be at 40+ paintings, considering we’re at the halfway point of 2013.

And painting number 25 means I’m a quarter of the way to my goal of 100 paintings in 2013. Since we’re almost halfway through the year, I guess I’ve got my work cut out for me! Luckily I’ve got lots of blank canvases and plenty of motivation! It’s time to get painting!

I finished these two paintings after I came home from California, but before I went to New York. In these paintings, I trying to keep hold of the magic I felt while painting at Brigitte’s.

the perfect day: paintings 15 – 16

After my long weekend in San Francisco, I headed to Sacramento to spend the rest of the week with Brigitte.

Brigitte is one of those friends that I met through the Internet but have gotten to know in person through mutual friends, travel, and conferences. Brigitte and I both love to talk, and anytime we get together the conversation never ends.

One of the best days I had (ok, truth be told they were all fun) was when we spent the day enjoying the sun in Brigitte’s backyard. Brigitte pulled out her paints and canvases (left over from an online painting class we both took) and we chatted and drank beer while I painted and she worked on the computer.

Standing in the sunshine, finally getting a taste of summer (it’s bern too cold for me this spring), with a good friend and good conversation, while working away at two paintings – I’d be hard pressed to come up with a more perfect day.

And, since the canvases were too big to fit in my suitcase, Brigitte is now the proud owner of two Megan Auman originals! (After all, she did supply the paints, brushes, and canvases.)

I just love seeing my paintings in Brigitte’s beautiful home and I love the idea of visiting someone and leaving a record of our time together!

Building Up: Paintings 12 – 14

All three of these paintings took a while to come together, but I love how the resulting layers create so much depth. I seem to be jumping back and forth between paintings that come together quickly in an intense burst of brushstrokes and these slower, built up paintings. I don’t see myself picking one over the other anytime soon, because there are things I love about each method,

running in the rain (painting #11)

I recently started a new running training program that I’m really excited about. We had some serious rain on Friday morning, but I wasn’t going to let that stop me. I’m sure I looked pretty ridiculous but I felt pretty badass charging through puddles while parents sat in their cars waiting to drop kids off at the elementary school.

Something about that experience (and my rain soaked clothes hanging in the bathroom) reminded me of this giant painting I made right after I got back from Europe:
