a new planter for my peperomia (and a new painting)

I mentioned in this post that last weekend I went to Renegade Brooklyn to shop! (And to check on one of the members of my online mentorship program.) But that tiny planter wasn’t the only new piece of Elizabeth Benotti ceramics I brought home from the show!

I also picked up this gorgeous teal and striped planter. Technically it’s a hanging planter, but it looks so good on this shelf with my peperomia scandens that for now, that’s where it’s staying. It’s definitely a huge improvement over the boring plain white planter it used to live in. (Which you can see in this post.)

It’s been a while since I’ve done any plant shopping, so on Saturday, I decided it was time to remedy that.

It turns out that my local garden center cuts way back on their selection of indoor plants over the summer in favor of lots more outdoor plants. Which was a bit of a bummer, because I don’t do outdoor plants. (I’m highly sensitive to poison ivy, so outdoor gardening is seriously stressful for me!)

Fortunately, they did have some succulents that were calling my name. I’ve been mostly resisting succulents to this point because I’m worried my current studio situation doesn’t have enough light for them. But I decided to give these guys a go.

And while they aren’t that big compared to some of the plants in my studio, they are pretty big as far as succulents go. And even though I wasn’t trying at all, these two plants ended up being the perfect fit for these two Elizabeth Benotti planters (ok, I think one is technically a vase) that I picked up over the last couple of months.

Of course, I couldn’t resist tossing in one of my new tiny paintings just to complete the scene!

studio plants and a possible Instagram break

Yesterday, I went to post the above picture on Instagram, then hesitated.

Why?

Because lately, I’ve been questioning whether it’s worth my time and energy to be sharing so much an a platform I (we) have so little control over. I even wrote an entire post about it on my other blog.

And of course, thanks to Digital Minimalism, I’ve already cut back my time spent scrolling on Instagram significantly.

Last weekend I went to visit my brother and his family in Delaware, and my reputation as a budding plant lady must be growing (puns intended) because they suggested we take a trip to the local greenhouse for a little Sunday morning plant shopping!

And while I tried to keep my myself from buying too many plants, I did come home with a couple of new peperomias (which is rapidly becoming my favorite plant type) and a few new pots to put them in! I’ve been looking for a few plants to put under this painting on the far wall of my current studio, and I think this little grouping works perfectly!

Since the plants in my studio are doing pretty well, I decided it was time to expand my growing plant collection to another room. And since I seem to be obsessed with plants that require lots of humidity, I figured the bathroom was the next best place. So the other weekend, I headed out to my local plant shop and picked up a pair of calatheas and a zebra plant. (Which one of my plant books then informed me was a very difficult plant to care for. But I decided I’m up for the challenge!)

Like I mentioned in my review of Joyful, I’m learning that the joys of owning real plants (and not just faux ones) is that they are full of surprises. Like when they start sporting new leaves, as my variegated rubber tree is currently doing!

I was so excited when I saw this little leaf start to poke out from the end of the plant! And I’ve been anxiously waiting over the last ten days for the leaf to uncurl.

I can honestly say that one of the best things I’ve done for myself so far this year is buy this stromanthe for my new studio. Sure, I’m loving all the plants I’ve been accumulating, but the stromanthe definitely steals the show. Any time I need a pick-me-up, I just need to glance at the beautiful foliage! (It’s especially helpful for getting myself through winter.)
