If you follow me on Instagram, you’ll know this new year has brought a bit of a transition for me. I’ve had to temporarily relocate out of my beloved studio so that we can repair some damage to the subfloor. (The result of some flooding that took place last summer.) While it’s definitely not ideal to have to move studio spaces (especially while I’m prepping for two trade shows) I’m doing my best to see the positives in the situation.

Fortunately, I’ve got a lovely space to relocate to while we do the repairs. Last winter, I did a little cosmetic renovation on our den (including painting the floor) and it’s made for the perfect happy space to relocate my business to for a few months while we do the repairs on my studio. And while I don’t love giving up my skylights in the middle of winter, I’m focusing on making this new space a bright, happy oasis filled with paintings and plants!

Without a doubt, one of the most exciting (and if we’re being honest, nerve racking) moments of the last year was having my studio photographed for Where Women Create magazine. (Ok, that and being on the same flight as Tim Gunn.) Since not every photo from the epic shoot made it into the magazine, I’d thought I’d share a few of my favorite images here.

my new studio!!!!!!!

Does that seem like a lot of exclamation points in the post title? Well, I could have easily put more! My new studio is finally finished, and I could not be happier with the way it looks!

If you remember, when we started, it looked like this:

And now it looks like this:

This space is everything I hoped for and more! I’ve got plenty more pictures to share (because I can’t stop marveling at how beautiful the space is) and I want to share a little more of my design inspiration and process in putting the space together, but those will have to wait for another post! Because for now, I’m just going to enjoy being in my studio!

After waiting for what seemed like forever, the flooring for my new studio finally arrived. (In the ultimate Murphy’s law moment, the flooring arrived right in the middle of a webinar I was hosting.)

I chose a faux-wood vinyl floor (to hopefully be more durable) in a white-grey finish. I really love how light and bright the room is, and I didn’t want a dark floor to bring that lightness down. After working in a dark basement for the last six years, I’m trying to keep the new space as light and bright as possible.

Sadly, I’ll have to wait to install the floor until I get back from Europe, but then again, I’ll be in Europe, so I guess it’s not so sad after all.

new studio, not soon enough

My new studio could not be ready soon enough! My current space is a mess (as evidenced by the fact that I’m making earrings on top of my laptop) but I can’t bring myself to give it the thorough cleaning it deserves until I’m ready to move to the new space.

Unfortunately, the new space is still a little ways off. We have a structure you can walk on now(!) but the plywood isn’t nailed down yet, and there’s still a railing in the floor. Not to mention that after all that’s done, I still have to clean out the rest of the stuff, install flooring, figure out the layout, and move, build, or buy furniture! Now that I’ve spelled it all out, it seems like a long way to go.

Perhaps I should just go clean my current space.

panoramic love

I recently got a new camera (more on that later) and one of the features that I’m absolutely in love with is the panoramic mode.

Now I’m well aware that iPhones and iPads are capable of this as well, but there’s something really satisfying about using my camera and hearing the click, click, click of the shutter as it captures the scene.

This wasn’t even a feature I knew about when I bought my camera, but it’s so addicting that I know I’ll be using it a lot, especially for the studio renovation and my trip to Europe!

Joe and I are currently working on the (very slow) process of renovating and moving into the house I grew up in. Most of the work is cosmetic, and involves sorting through 30+ years of accumulated stuff, tearing up old carpet and wallpaper, and redoing the bathrooms.

But one of the first projects we’re tackling is also one of the most major – we’re converting the old pool room into my new studio!

Now, I know what you’re thinking. Yes, there was a pool inside the house. But the pool has fallen into disrepair, and the cost to get it running again far exceeds the cost to convert the space into a studio.

And what an amazing studio it will make! High ceilings, skylights, and plenty of space.

As you can tell from some of the pictures, I’ve already been using the space for painting. But when it’s all done, it will house my jewelry design and production space, office, and shipping area, not to mention space for painting.

Right now the space is pretty much a mess, but on New Year’s Day, Joe made some serious progress on the floor. (That’s him hard at work in the pictures!) We purposefully designed the floor structure so that if I ever move to a different studio space, we could convert the room back into a pool.

I’ve worked so hard on my business over the last 6 years, and I’m so excited to move into the space of my dreams. It still needs a lot of work, but I’m also really excited to share the transformation with you.
