I took the above images last summer in an Anthropologie in Chicago. I hadn’t though about them in a while, but I was laying in backgrounds for some new paintings, when this picture reminded me of them:

I love when the images that inspire me make their way back into my subconscious months later. It reminds me how much it’s worth it to constantly seek out new visual experiences.

Today I’m off to Philly for the Buyers Market of American Craft. The jewelry preview opens tomorrow night and the whole show opens on Saturday. Stop by and say hi if you’re there, I’ll be in booth 615.

what a weekend

This weekend started off with more than a little excitement. We woke up Saturday morning to find that a small barn across the intersection from the new/old house was on fire. But thanks to some inexactness on the emergency log, the fire could just as easily have been our house. So we jumped out of bed and rushed over. (Just to be clear, the fire was across the street from the house I grew up in, which is the house we’re renovating to move into someday. That’s also the house with my new studio. We currently live about a mile from there.)

Later that day, I planned on getting in some studio time to finish up a few new pieces for New York Gift this week, only to find I had run out of acetylene. (And I wouldn’t be able to get more until Monday.)

So I took it as a sign, tried to relax a little, worked on my line sheet, and snuck in a little painting. Not exactly the weekend I had planned, and way more excitement then I needed!

Now that I’m back to full tanks, I’m finishing up some new pieces, photographing them, and finishing those pesky line sheets! I can’t believe I leave for New York on Friday!

If you know me, you know that I hate winter. When it’s cold, my brain just shuts down.

Yesterday was kind of a grey day, and I found myself online, searching for cheap flights to somewhere warm next week. And while I did find some, heading south isn’t really in the cards for me next week. (I’ve got some work to do to get ready for New York Gift at the end of the month.)

So I did the next best thing. I headed into the studio and painted with the brightest colors I had. Lemony yellows and bright blues and greens. And you know what, it worked! By the end of my painting session, I was feeling much warmer!

Paintings 1 + 2

I’ve finished my first two paintings of 2013! Both are 12″x12″ acrylic on canvas. The process I’ve been developing is that I work on multiple canvases at once, in lots of different sizes. The 12x12s are the smallest size I work with, and they’re nice because they tend to come together much more quickly.

I’ve got several larger canvases in the works, and I’m hoping to get a few more paintings finished by the end of the weekend!

I have to admit I’ve been feeling a lot like the above quote lately. I’ve been doing a lot of reading and thinking, but words just don’t seem to come. Painting, on the other had, seems to be the best way to express what I’m feeling.

When these two images (a recent Instagram pic and a painting I’m working on for my class) appeared next to each other in my phone’s photo stream, I was struck by the similarities. It seems I’m very drawn to contrast these days.

In fact, it’s a pretty major theme in my jewelry as well, as evidenced by both the shift collection and my new droplets collection:

PS. If you’re waiting for new work to make it’s way into my shop, it’s coming! Just sort of slowly. I’ve got three trade shows this month, and as usual, my focus is getting work into my stores. But I promise, the work is coming to the online shop!

summer in the studio

I can’t think of a better way to spend my summers than working in the studio. Even when I’ve got lots of distractions, I like to carve out some serious time for my own private art summer camp.

And that’s what I’ve been up to lately. Lots and lots of studio time.

Cranking out new work for my three (yes, three) upcoming trade shows.

And doing a little painting too.
